The stars will be out in Zanesville on August 27th. NBA legends Jerry Lucas and John Havlicek, Hall of Fame Coach Bob Knight (via video), and former team mates Joe Roberts and Mel Nowell will join Bill Hosket appearing at an event in Zanesville to honor their college coach, Fred Taylor.  Lucas, Havlicek, Knight, Hosket, Roberts, Newell and Taylor have all been inducted in the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. The gymnasium in Littick Hall on the Ohio University Zanesville Campus will be named in honor of Taylor who grew up in Zanesville, played professional baseball for the Washington Senators and guided Ohio State to its only basketball national championship in 1960.  Lucas, Havlicek, Roberts and Knight were players on the championship team. “Fred Taylor is one of Zanesville’s most famous native sons.  He clearly had a significant impact on many young men who played for him and we are thrilled that Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek, Bill Hosket, Joe Roberts and Mel Nowell have agreed to appear at an event to benefit the Friends of the Muskingum Recreation Center and share their memories of their coach,” commented Michael Steen, President of the MRC Board.  This event is hosted by the Friends of the MRC in support of the maintenance of the Muskingum Recreation Center (MRC). Littick Hall, built in 1978, was renovated as part of the MRC recently. Open since in 2014, the Muskingum Recreation Center is a state of the art exercise, fitness and aquatic facility located on the Ohio University Zanesville.  The gymnasium, which will be named the Fred Taylor Memorial Gymnasium, is attached to the MRC... read more

Muskingum Recreation Center Dedication Ceremony Draws Donors, Partners Together

As printed in Ohio University’s Compass Jun 3, 2014  |  By Laura Waggle Original article HERE. “When you’re surrounded with good people, great things happen,” said Beth Chapman, executive director of the Muskingum Recreation Center. Many of those good people gathered on Monday, June 2, to dedicate their joint effort and achievement – the Muskingum Recreation Center. Sen. Troy Balderson, State Rep. Brian Hill, and Ohio University Zanesville Dean Dr. Jenifer Cushman were on hand to help dedicate the new facility. After Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis cut the official ribbon for the facility, he commented, “This is so significant for the community, and it’s already being used in a powerful way to change and affect lives.” The recreation center began as a feasibility study eight years ago. The Muskingum County YMCA had long endeavored to supply the community with an indoor aquatic facility since its old facility on South Fifth Street in downtown Zanesville was demolished 30 years ago. The feasibility study showed strong community support for an aquatic facility, and the campus of Ohio University Zanesville was chosen as the ideal location. Architect Tom Poulos, of Williams Architects, remembers. “At beginning of the feasibility study, the question was this: How do we make this work from a business perspective – with students here at Ohio University Zanesville and Zane State, the community, and the partners all coming together as one to use this facility together? It was really a grassroots, organized project. From the beginning everybody was dedicated – all of the partners here in the community. They had some great visions and some great dreams.... read more
